My Favorite Moments from Kelly’s Podcast Appearance on “Did That Age Well?”
Note: I’ve specified the start times of the videos but don’t have the technology to cut them off. You can move on to the next when you feel it.
Kelly was recently a guest on the “Did That Age Well?,” a podcast hosted by our new friend Molly, where they two of them discussed the experience of rewatching the 1985 film “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” starring Sarah Jessica Parker & Helen Hunt, and the podcast is really good!! (The movie, if you’re interested, is free on Tubi. A lot of it aged well, especially the friendship, but much of it doesn’t, especially poor Jonathan Silverman’s character.)
I’m biased obviously because I like Molly, who just did an amazing, engaging, hilarious job reading her old diary entries as part of the recent Mortified Denver show (one of my all-time favorite events):
And I think Kelly is pretty great herself, but still, the podcast is really good even if you don’t already like Molly or Kelly or haven’t seen the movie because, as they put it:
Kelly: We have a lot of ground to cover from a friendship standpoint, and I think starting by talking about this movie is a good foundation for us as friends.
Molly: I know, this is big for us and if nobody watches or listens to this, I don’t care … but please do! I think they’ll like it.
Kelly: I think they’ll like it too.
I think you’ll like it, too. You can listen to it in full wherever you listen to podcasts, or catch some of it through some of my favorite parts about watching these two build their friendship while discussing a movie from their childhoods:
Why Kelly Loves the Movie
Hearing Kelly describe how she learned things from movies made total sense to me because we’ve talked so much about what it was like growing up running around a movie store, and because I’ve watched her learn so many different things. Also, this is when I realized that Molly was a very good host:
When Kelly Threatened Molly’s Dad
This late quip about what will happen if Kelly doesn’t enjoy Back to School is a classic example of A+ Kelly O’Connell humor:
When Kelly Gets Distracted and Molly Helps Out
Kelly is trying really hard to non-judgmentally notice and accept things like distractibility, and I was pumped to watch her do it here. When you live and work with your partner you get to notice a whole lot of things, and I’ve definitely watched Kelly get so excited she forgets what was going on (something I’m quite good at myself), and it was cool and instructive for me to see how Molly responded:
The Phrase “I Dabbled in Dance”
I laughed out loud at this:
This is what all the “dabbling” has wrought:
Molly’s Idea for an Update
Molly astutely pointed out that this movie would have been far better if Sarah Jessica-Parker & Helen Hunt just danced with each other at the competition. It’s such a good point, she is exactly right. As the two discuss, there are a lot of controlling men for a movie called “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun.”
Molly also noted early in the podcast that Cyndi Lauper was not on board with this movie when it was originally made, and that the studio had to acquire the rights to the original song that was not the smash hit she had crafted. Maybe Cyndi and Sarah and Helen can team up for a remake with a better perspective, just like Cyndi’s rewritten version resonated more with a much larger audience.
This Spot-On, Hard-Hitting Critique
No notes:
When Kelly talks about the attitude that started her business
This is definitely true, and something I admire most about Kel, and it was cool to hear her discuss it:
I’ve seen Kelly hide behind shoe racks out of shyness, and I’m just so proud and impressed that she keeps following her “Why not me?” spirit to all of these amazing new places.
